A Message from the W11 Opera Trustees
“From two very small cogs -- heartfelt thanks! We've loved it” (W11 Opera mother and son)
Parents inevitably form the solid backbone that supports the cast of W11 Opera's productions. Like their performing offspring, there is ample scope to form bonds of enduring friendship and to share in the frequent laughter, occasional pain and guaranteed sense of achievement that is felt by all at the end of the performances. Indeed, parents and children often form a particular bond of their own when both have taken part in this unforgettable experience.
All the administration for this Company is done on a volunteer basis. With a cast of around 80 young people, it simply would not be possible to reach the standard that W11 constantly achieves without the help of its mothers and fathers. We are forever grateful to our stalwart parents for the tremendous help that they give us.
Group Mothers share in the nurture of a particular group during rehearsals. They see the piece unfolding with the children and are a haven of refreshment during the breaks. Artistic and practical types lend a hand with Props or Set Painting under the guidance of the designer, those with machines and know how offer to help the designer sewing Costumes and those with the gift of the gab or with writing and graphic experience help out with the Programme and Publicity. Fathers and teenage brothers add brawn and bonding on Set Building days and Box Office, Community Outreach and Fundraising are other areas where assistance is vital.
One person cannot cover all these fields, nor can two, but if everyone takes a small part, miracles can happen and along the way great pleasure and joy are a just reward. Dominic Sewell, writing in Opera Now, summed it up from an outsider's point of view: “It’s pleasing for an audience to see excellence fostered on the stage with so many people - parents, professionals and volunteers -- being so involved in the production. I'm sure they will remember the experience for many years to come.”
We look forward to welcoming you to the W11 family.
