With the intention of bringing musical theatre to a broad audience, each year W11 Opera invites members of the local community to a free Community Performance. This initiative reaches out to local organizations which work with families, the elderly, special needs groups and children. The aims of this performance are to provide entertainment to those for whom it is not readily available, to expose a wide variety of young people to an original opera, and, potentially, to attract future cast members.
The Community Performance creates a unique and welcoming experience for its audience. A tea is provided for all guests before the show, and the audience members have the opportunity to mingle with the young cast after the performance. In addition, representatives of W11 can offer a workshop before the show so that members of the Community Performance audience get as much from the performance as possible.
Groups who have attended in recent years include:
Langford Primary School, The Sheppard Trust, Addison Primary School, Woodland Medical Needs Unit, Nazareth House, Larmenier School, LBH&F Children’s Choir, Lena Gardens School, The Clement James Centre, Harrison Homes for the Elderly, St. Mary’s School, Camphill Community, Mousetrap Theatre Project, Twyford School, Potters House, Pioneer Women’s Housing Association, Avondale School, Equal People and Queens Park Junior Singers.
Anyone interested in bringing a group should contact the Outreach team.
Avondale Extra
In 2003, W11 Opera embarked upon a special association with Avondale Extra, a local charity promoting extra curricular activities and special opportunities for pupils at Avondale Park Primary School, which serves a multi-ethnic community in the heart of North Kensington.
Avondale Extra now annually sponsors pupils from the school to participate in W11 Opera productions, encouraging and supporting these young cast members in a unique opportunity.
“I felt very proud of our 2 Avondale girls this year, especially because the standard of performance was so high... W11 Opera is a fantastic experience for any child but particularly perhaps for our children with such very limited experience of theatre and music.”
Fiona Greenwood, Chairman, Avondale Extra
“I really like W11 Opera because it is so fun... The reason why I joined W11 is because I saw it last year and I loved it. It was GREAT!”
Kashore Ballard Kumar, Avondale pupil
W11 Bursaries
The W11 Children's Opera Trust readily offers sponsorship to children who need financial support in order to participate in the Opera. Parental ability to pay the annual Registration Fee need never prevent a child from participating, and sponsorship is freely awarded on the basis of family need rather than musical ability.
Please contact the Auditions team for more information.
