W11 Opera and Opera Holland Park
For well over a decade W11 Opera is proud to have provided Opera Holland Park with children and children’s choruses for productions during their annual summer festival. The participation of members of the W11 cast in the ‘best opera company of 2010’ (The Sunday Times) is far and away the best method of introducing and enthusing the young and their families in what has often been perceived as an inaccessible or elitist art form.
The children’s experience of being part of such high quality productions leaves an indelible stamp on their perception of opera. They absorb not only their own particular vocal parts but also much of the rest of the work just by being part of the rehearsal process and singing with adult professionals is a unique and hugely rewarding experience for them. As a result they feel a real affinity with each piece in which they have been involved and their young vitality and exuberance contribute a very different dynamic to the stage which has been much enjoyed by the paying public.
The children have to work hard to learn their parts in a variety of different languages and need discipline to attend rehearsals and performances in addition to handling the daily school routine. However, when extracts from Tosca, Carmen or Cosi fan tutte are heard issuing forth from their music players you know that a fertile seed has been well sown in the minds of the next generation of opera lovers.
Quotes from young W11 cast members
Despite the late nights it has been a great taste of proper opera with a proper cast and orchestra and good acting practice. It has got my confidence for acting, I have made new friends and I would love to do it again next year. (Theo)
It is fabulous. (Magnus)
The atmosphere around the group was absolutely lovely. The set was amazing and the costumes were as well. I felt very special and proud to be in such a great opera and it was lovely to be able to focus on acting. (Anna)
Holland Park Opera is so fun, I hope we can do it next year! Everyone is so nice and the opera is really cool. I can’t wait till next year. (Zoe)
Being part of Opera Holland Park is amazing, like nothing else I’ve ever done. I love coming in the summery evenings and hearing the lovely and experienced voices of the cast. Performing next to them makes me feel so priviledged (sic). Even though it is quite nervracking (sic) knowing that a paying audience is coming to see us, I love it. After a performance I feel how you feel after a rollercoaster, proud but still a bit scared. (Melissa)
