W11 Opera has always taken immense pride in its strong links with the local community in and around West London.
In recent years W11 has extended its reach in three principal ways.
It has staged Community Performances for school children, the elderly, the disadvantaged and the disabled, which are always warmly received with many schools and groups returning year after year.
It has run workshops in local state schools, mainly in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea and the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, to introduce opera to children who may otherwise not be exposed to it. The aim is so that they can appreciate the storylines, music and acting involved in a work relevant to them. In partnership with the Hammersmith Library, it has run family workshops caller “Loud in the Library” to introduce local families to the company and its work.
Since 2003 it has partnered with the Avondale Extra bursary scheme which sponsors up to four young singers a year. Additional bursaries are offered by W11 itself to ensure that no child need turn down a part in a W11 production for financial reasons.
Over the last decade W11 cast members have sometimes taken part annually in professional productions at Opera Holland Park, often being noted by reviewers for their energy and exuberance.
